Grain Sorghum in the Delta

Grain sorghum, also called milo, is a cereal grain grown in the Arkansas Delta. In places, large tracts of the short, heavy-bodied plants grow. The plants are topped with large seed heads. Grain sorghum is used in the production of food, fodder, sorghum molasses, alcoholic beverages, and biofuels. Grain sorghum, like rice, wheat, and corn is a grass. The grasses are wind pollinated and don’t need insects like honey bees for pollination. They therefore don’t need to offer nectar or pollen to entice bees. The other two major crops of the Delta, soybeans and cotton, are flowering plants. They both offer the honey bees a reward of nectar and pollen to attract the insects for pollination, a necessary step for seed production and plant reproduction. Soybeans and cotton are major sources of nectar for honey production. The acreage planted in grain sorghum—or rice, wheat, or corn—is like a desert to the honey bee. A bee flying over a large grain sorghum field will find nothing to eat or bring back to the hive.

Farming in the Arkansas Delta is an example of modern industrial agriculture. It is highly efficient in producing large amounts of high value food and fiber crops. For the honey bees and other pollinators, the modern farm can be a harsh environment. Large tracts of a single plant offer little forage except during the short time that that particular crop is in bloom. If the crops are grasses, the crops offer no food to the pollinators. Modern farm fields are often designed without a weedy margin. The crops are planted to the very edge of the field and borders are maintained without weeds. This arrangement often results in a shortage of year-around food and habitat for the pollinators.   1. We noticed that our Fall honey in Bartlett, TN (over the river) is very dark, and almost tastes like molasses. Any ideas what plants they pollinate that gives us such dark Fall honey?

    I suspect that your bees collected a considerable amount of nectar from tulip tree, or yellow poplar. I bet that it's good, though!

  3. We raised bees and crops when I was a child, I used to watch the huge amount of bees flying to and from the milo fields. The milo at the end of the field by the bees were full heads loaded with seeds but the head size dwindled the farther you got from the bees. The honey from those bees was very dark with a strong flavor (best honey ever) every year we planted milo but never with any other crop.

  4. Silverwolf, this is a curious situation. Milo, or grain sorghum, is a wind-pollinated grass. Milo doesn’t produce nectar, so I suspect that your dark, strong flavored honey came from another source. Maybe there was a buckwheat field in your bees’ flight area.

  5. I once bought honey in a remote part of Kenya that we thought was sorghum molasses. The locals were selling genuine honey that we mistook for molasses.

  6. I have a couple buckets of honey that taste like smokey barbecue sauce. Any ideas on the nectar source?

  7. The UC Davis Honey and Pollination Center identified over one hundred honey aromas and flavors. Among similar flavors are smoky, molasses, burnt sugar, and brown sugar. I’m sorry, but I don’t know the nectar source of smoky barbecue sauce flavored honey. Save this honey to share with special friends!
